Downtown Henderson Project Attends Kentucky Main Street Program Awards

The Downtown Henderson Project staff attended the 2012 Kentucky Main Street Program Awards, hosted by the Kentucky Heritage Council that took place Wednesday, January 25, 2012 at the Grand Theatre in Frankfort. As part of the awards recognition, the Downtown Henderson Project along with Danville, KY (The Heart of Danville) were recognized as the two oldest programs in the state, both celebrating 25 years of downtown revitalization. The Downtown Henderson Project was also nominated for the Best of Promotion – Retail / Event Award for the 2011 Art Hop Gallery Show & Sale.

Awards were also presented based on the four-point approach model, Design, Organization, Promotion and Economic Restructuring , created by the National Trust Main Street Center, principles communities can use to revitalize their business district by leveraging local assets – from cultural or architectural heritage to local enterprises and community pride.

The Kentucky Heritage Council brought revitalization professionals from across Kentucky to celebrate a year of successful initiatives. With the theme “A Shiny New Year Full of Opportunity,” the program encouraged, inspired and acknowledged the Kentucky Main Street organizations.

Administered by the Kentucky Heritage Council / State Historic Preservation Office, the Kentucky Main Street Program is based on the National Trust model and is the oldest statewide Main Street program in the nation. The awards ceremony was the highlight of a three-day training conference.

The Main Street program works to build local businesses, support public-private partnerships and enhance economic development while preserving unique local architecture and existing community infrastructure. The state program can document more than $3.5 billion reinvested in Kentuckysince 1979. The Downtown Henderson Project reported these reinvestment figures for the Central Business District in 2011:  11 new businesses, 37 building rehabilitations including façade projects, 1500 jobs in the CBD, and a total including public and private reinvestment of $19,519,120.

Unchained Day & Small Business Saturday

In this difficult economy, a national trend is taking place. These are called “Buy Local or Shop Local” campaigns that many communities are embracing. Henderson created our own “Shop Local” campaign over 5 years ago called THINK HENDERSON. Here are several other ‘shop local’ campaigns that we wanted to share with you and encourage you to THINK HENDERSON FIRST on these dates.  Shopping local works – 365 days a year!

Saturday, November 19th is Unchained Day. The day is promoted as an event in which independent businesses call to the attention of their customers the importance of spending their dollars with an ”unchained store”.

By spending your money with a local independently owned business you are putting back money into your local economy.

This year Small Business Saturday is Saturday, November 26, 2011. Small Business Saturday (SBS) was started in 2010 by American Express Open to drive sales to small businesses and to recognize their vital contributions to the economy, job creation, and local communities.

For last year’s campaign, the National Trust Main Street Center signed up three Main Street Communities that launched Small Business Saturday events to show what could be done.

Pick 3 spend 50… Save your local economy 3/50 Project.

Think of 3 locally owned, independent, brick and mortar businesses you love and don’t want to lose. Spend $50 a month with the local, independent business.

For every $100 spent in locally owned, brick and mortar business, $68 return to your community through taxes, payroll, and related business expenditures.  Spend it with a big box or national chain, and $68 drops to $43. Spend it online $0.

Buy local to boost your local economy. “THINK HENDERSON” for your shopping, dining and service  needs!!

Who’s On Facebook in our Downtown?

If your business has not taken time to get a vanity Facebook web address you need to quickly before the name is taken.

To do that go to www.facebook.com/username You need to have a page and have 25 people like you before Facebook will allow you to get one specifically for your business. That used to be the case.  Facebook has since changed that rule. Your business does NOT have to have 25 people like them before you can get a vanity name.

Below are several Downtown Henderson businesses that have Facebook Vanity web addresses.  Be sure to “like” them! The more buzz we can create about downtown merchants the more we all benefit.
