Memorial Day is a day of remembrance and thanks for those who have died in our Nation’s service. Memorial Day is also a day to celebrate peace.

Downtown Henderson Kentucky has one of the largest displays of crosses honoring those who have died who have served our country in military service.

Join the Henderson War Memorial Foundation Inc. for the Memorial Day Ceremony in Central Park located in Downtown Henderson on May 27, 2013 at 10:00 am.

The crosses remain in the park till a few days after Memorial Day.

The DHP staff worked diligently to provide quality entertainment for not only Henderson but the Tri-State area. We appreciate the sponsors we have worked with over the years and because of them we were able to provide quality musicians. We have not given up the Summer Concert Series but we will not have one this year. We will see what next year brings and if we can, we will bring it back!

However, we are creating a larger Independence Bank 4th of July Celebration for the community. We are envisioning more children’s activities from 6 to 8pm. We will have musical entertainment from 6pm until 11pm and food vendors during the event. More information on the Independence Bank 4^th of July Celebration will be coming soon!

We would love to have church groups, Girls/ Boy Scouts, and any other organization who would like to volunteer their time. We will gather at the Depot parking lot at 100 N. Water Street across from the Post Office at 8:30am. We will distribute the flowers and assign the locations for each group to work. Please bring digging tools and gloves if you want.

 The DHP received many comments on the appearance of the flowers and how beautiful our downtown was. We plan to create an atmosphere that is inviting and welcoming to our community and our visitors again this year.  If you were one of the many who enjoyed the flowers last year, we would welcome any monetary donations you would like to give. You can make a check payable to the DHP, 131 N. Main St., Henderson, KY  42420. We are a non-profit organization and your donation is tax deductible.

You may be asking yourself, “What ON EARTH is a TRASHION SHOW”?  It is a fun way to raise awareness about recycling and our limited landfill space while sparking the creativity and playfulness in all of us.  It appeals to children and adults alike.  Who doesn’t love a chance to dress up and model? What a great way to make us all aware of just how much less we COULD be throwing away!

The 2006 committee was replaced with some new faces in March 2013 along with the DHP, Tourism and Chamber representatives. The new committee decided our current “Think Henderson” Buy Local logo needed a fresh look. With a few brainstorming sessions, the new logo “Love What’s Local!” logo was created!

We ask our community and friends to visit the “Love What’s Local!” Facebook page and LIKE the page and SHARE it on your FB page! We want to get this information out to the community and we need your help!

Be sure to keep checking the page to see the great “Local Businesses” and what they have going on. We ask your continued support of our independent local businesses by shopping and supporting them. These independent businesses are the ones that help support our community through donations to the youth sports programs, the Henderson County Schools, the Lions Club Auction, and numerous other community activities. Now is the time to repay them for their continued support!

Happy Feet /  Learning Feet is a collaborative program that provides shoes to selected income eligible students in Henderson County. The Henderson County Schools Family Resource / Youth Service Center Directors identify the eligible students for the program. These students are given vouchers to redeem at a local shoe store, where they are properly sized and properly fit. They can choose a pair of shoes from a predetermined selection, based on the price. The average cost per pair of shoes is $30. These vouchers are provided on an as needed basis throughout the school year.

Participants (Designers) sketch designs, using only trash or items thrown away as their materials.  These materials can only be held together by duct tape, safety pins or twine.  These sketches and the material lists must be submitted for approval to the judges by March 20, 2013.  These must pass the judges approval for tastefulness and wear-ability, so that there are no “wardrobe malfunctions” if at all possible!  Once submitted and approved, they can be constructed.  The designer can choose to wear and model their outfit on the runway themselves, or they can have someone else model it for them.  The design will be judged using the following criteria:

Originality 0-10

Wear-ability 0-10

Difficulty of construction 0-10

Best use of materials 0-10

Judges scores will be totaled and highest score will win

There will be a $500.00 Grand Prize! There will also be a $100.00 People’s Choice Award!

The winning designs will be featured in the Studio 421 Display Window after the Trashion Show!
