Folklife Festival

Looking for something interesting to do as a family this weekend that is also “Free”? Come to the Bluegrass in the Park Folklife Festival on Saturday, August 14 and check out all the out of the ordinary and fun things to do! The Folklife Festival is located in Audubon Mill Park and is from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Here is what you can find when you come!

Narrative Tent

Sarah Rejoice Brown  (11:15am)– Occupational Tradition of Coal Mining in Western Kentucky specifically stories, customs, terminology, and related rare glimpses into tricks of the underground trade. Western Kentucky miners will join Sarah.

Jim Claypool (10:00am)– Rascals, Heroes and Just Plain Uncommon Folks from Kentucky. Claypool will profile a choice selection of the many colorful Kentuckians, male and female, noted and notorious- whose stories make our history so interesting and entertaining.

David Hurt Grandpa Jones - (noon) Louis Marshall Jones, better known as Grandpa, was the son of Henderson County sharecroppers. Many are familiar with the southern-drawl of good ole “Grandpa Jones”, rattling off a list of southern fare or pickin’ and singin’ a lively banjo number on the popular 1970s show “Hee-Haw.” His persona will come to life again at the folklife area.

Folklife Exhibitors: 

Shade Tree Players – Demonstrating the art of dulcimer music.

Fried Apple PiesReva Mitchell and/or Christi Johnson – children can make as well as eat their own fried apple pies.

CanningAmanda Hardy and/or Susan Morgan – Demonstrating the steps to canning your own salsa

Growing & Harvesting Herbs Debbie Lowrance Master Gardener

BurgooPaul Stone – Paul will be telling how and what ingredients are used in making burgoo.

Sidewalk Chalk Art – Paper quilt patterns on display as well as patterns that children can trace onto the sidewalk and color.

QuilterJanet Burke, will be doing a quilting demonstration and have quilts on display. Janet will have a portable quilt frame where she will show how to quilt and let people give it a try; she’ll also show the process of making a quilt.

Clogging Barry Lanham & the Foot Stompin’ Express – Beginner clogging class and demonstration.

Llama ShearingSharon Bumb will have 3-4 llamas and will demonstrate the shearing of a llama.

Felter and Fabric Arts – Ladies demonstrating how the wool from a llama can be processed into fabric.

Children’s Games Mark Simmons-Henderson Parks & Rec. Dept. Checkers, chess, hula-hoops and washer boards

Western Ky Miner Display – Sarah Brown will display mining gear that represents several generations worth of changes in the coal industry.

Proof of Concept Canoe – Peter Chevalier will have a canoe and kayak on display with the concept that these may have been crafted with materials from Audubon’s time. He will also be carving a paddle.

DHP Summer Concert Series Gospel Evening on the River

The DHP Summer Concert Series will provide gospel music on the riverfront  Friday, July 23 at Audubon Mill Park beginning at 7:00 P.M. Local Henderson gospel group River City Quartet will perform as will Paul Ross.

Paul Ross is a Henderson native who has been in and around music his whole life. He was the lead singer for the group “God Sent” which performed at the Summer Concert Series 2005. As a group they recorded several CD’s. He currently is part of the worship team at his church and sings as a soloist in and around Henderson. Paul has recorded four CD’s and is in the process of recording a new one.

River City Quartet is a southern gospel quartet that is based out of  Henderson, KY. For the past fourteen years, River City has been singing gospel music throughout the Midwest, in churches and concert halls as well as festivals. River City is comprised of Greg Lindsey, son Seth Lindsey, Mark Ross, brother to Paul Ross and Jamie Layton, who makes his home in Carmi, IL. The group sings original songs written by Greg Lindsey as well as classic Southern Gospel songs.

Bring your lawn chair or blanket and join us on the Henderson Riverfront for some wonderful gospel music!

The Independence Bank 4th of July Celebration

FireworksJoin us for a favorite summertime event! Celebrate the Fourth of July in style at the Independence Bank 4th of July Celebration! Live music, food, children’s activities, and a fireworks show over the Ohio River make for one incredible way to celebrate the Fourth! And admission is FREE!

Fireworks for the 4th of July Celebration are sponsored by Independence Bank, Musical Entertainment sponsored by Benton-Glunt, Tapp and Roselawn, SITEX and State Farm Insurance Agents Anne Thrasher Boyd, Al Baity and Steve Tweddell. The musical entertainment will begin on the riverfront at 7:00 P.M. with Keith Vincent. Keith Vincent, who mixes a little bit country with a little bit rock ‘n roll and creates a whole lot of fun, will provide the musical entertainment until the fireworks show! The fireworks show, sponsored by Independence Bank, will begin at 9:00 P.M. Food concessions from Rex’s BBQ and R&L Concessions will be available, and will be open by 5:30 P.M. Childrens’ activities will be from 6:00-8:00 P.M. in Audubon Mill Park and the fireworks show will begin at 9:00 P.M. Rain date will be Monday, July 5, 2010.

The DHP Summer Concert Series events are all FREE, and are held on Friday evenings from June 25-July 30. This year, the series celebrates it’s 10 year anniversary – a decade of talented musicians! There will not be a Friday concert on July 2. The concerts will be held in Audubon Mill Park, located on the riverfront from 7:00 P.M till 9:00 P.M.

The DHP Summer Concert Series also receives sponsorships from The Henderson County Tourist Commission and media sponsors News25, The Gleaner and WSON Radio.

DHP Summer Concert Series

taffy war zoom agedThe Downtown Henderson Project will kick off their 10th Annual Summer Concert Series this Friday night, June 25th at 7:00pm in Audubon Mill Park.

Dave Lutz and Jon Snyder will be performing an evening full of music from The Drifters to Styx to Bon Jovi. Join us as Dave and Jon take us back in time. You’ll be in for a terrific evening of entertainment.

Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and join us on the Henderson Riverfront.

The DHP will also unveil the third in a series of Audubon Collectibles.

Children’s Art Camp and Umbrella Workshop

Are your children saying, ‘there’s nothing to do!’ Well the Downtown Henderson Project and the City of Henderson Parks and Recreation Dept have something to help entertain your kids!! Come to the Children’s Art Camp and Umbrella Workshop at the John F. Kennedy Community Center at Vine and Alvasia Streets in Henderson, KY. This kid friendly event runs from 2:00-4:oo P.M. and is sure to put a smile on their faces!

Here is a sampling of what the kids will be doing….making visors, flip-flops, noise makers, newspaper hats and much more as well as face painting and popcorn will be served. The umbrella workshop is also included on this day. You may bring an umbrella with you or some will be provided. The umbrellas will be decorated with flowers, ric-rac, beads and anything else that can be hot glued to an umbrella! These umbrellas can be used at the Street Strut Parade that will be held on Saturday, June 12th at 10:00 A.M. on the east side of Central Park in downtown Henderson, KY.
